Solyndra Debacle Continues To Symbolize President Obama’s Failed Record

HARRISBURG — Republican Party of Pennsylvania Chairman Rob Gleason released the following statement regarding President Obama’s mishandling of our taxpayer dollars and the effect of his failed record on this election:

“Even though his inner circle knew that Solyndra was a disaster waiting to happen, President Obama still decided to waste millions of taxpayer dollars on a company that laid off thousands of employees and is now bankrupt. Which is worse: the fact that the President knew this was a bad investment and continued anyway, or the fact that his closest advisors have been entangled in a massive cover-up to save face ever since? Either way, Solyndra was more than just a $535 million dollar mistake; the American taxpayers were stuck with the bill.

“Our Commonwealth’s hardworking voters care about candidates’ records, and the more they learn about President Obama’s failed record, the less they believe he deserves a second term. Words like ‘bankruptcy’ and ‘failed investments’ mean the same thing to all Americans regardless of their political affiliation. When President Obama loses Pennsylvania on November 6, it will be because we held him accountable for four years of high unemployment, skyrocketing debt, and fewer jobs, symbolized by failed investments like Solyndra.

“While President Obama continues his spending spree, Governor Tom Corbett has cut up the government’s credit card, and since Day One, Governor Corbett has honored taxpayers by cutting spending and holding the line on taxes. Fiscal irresponsibility has been an unfortunate legacy of the Obama Administration and it’s time we elect a leader like Mitt Romney who will be more careful with taxpayer dollars.”

Its report, parts of which were obtained by The Washington Post, suggests that then-OMB Director Jack Lew let the refinancing move forward without intervening, even though some OMB analysts thought a refinancing plan that favored private investors might violate the law. A former Obama campaign adviser wrote to presidential counselor Pete Rouse in February suggesting that Chu be replaced immediately with a manager who could better direct Energy Department funds. The company had experienced a series of financial setbacks during the previous year, including cancellation of a stock offering. During the July meetings, company officials claimed that Solyndra’s financial condition was improving, and that the company’s revenues were growing, according to the memo.
