HARRISBURG — Republican Party of Pennsylvania Communications Director Megan Sweeney released the following statement regarding the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015.
“Senator Casey is turning his back on important legislation because a group of his fellow Democrat senators stalled a bipartisan bill designed to combat human trafficking,” Sweeney said. “Rather than actively imploring his Democrat colleagues to focus on a bill which strengthens federal penalties for crimes such as human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children, Senator Casey sat idly by and did nothing, and all at the expense of the vulnerable people who are targets of this heinous activity.
“The Polaris Project estimates that there have been nearly 20,000 unique cases of human trafficking in the United States over the past seven years. Senator Bob Casey’s inaction is damaging to the effort of correcting the horrors of human trafficking.
“Senate Republicans remain committed to making these much needed improvements to federal law designed to keep Pennsylvanians and all Americans safe and will not be dissuaded by Democrat obstructionist tactics.”
According to the non-governmental organization The Polaris Project, there have been nearly 20,000 unique cases of human trafficking in the United States over the past seven years. (“2014 Statistics,” The Polaris Project, Accessed 3/16/2015)
