U.S. Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-8) issued the following statement regarding the death of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher:
“It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher early this morning.
Thatcher was a visionary leader and dedicated servant to the people of the United Kingdom and the international community for over 20 years as that nation’s longest serving prime minister.
Shortly after famously announcing she did not think there would ever be a woman prime minister in her lifetime, Thatcher became the first female to ever hold the position in 1979.
During her time in office she was an advocate for individual rights, limited government and actively advanced her economic policy of lower taxes and deregulation known to this day as Thatcherism.
Dubbed the ‘Iron Lady’ by Soviet press following a Cold War speech in 1976, Thatcher went on to work closely the U.S. and allies in denouncing the spread of communism in the 20th century.
Her work led her to a close relationship with then president Ronald Reagan who once referred to her as ‘best man in England.’
Today I join the people of the U.K., along with others around the world, in honoring the life and legacy of leadership that Margaret Thatcher leaves behind.”
