U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, R-Hazleton, will serve as the next Chairman of the Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management Subcommittee on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Full Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) made the announcement earlier today.
Barletta has served on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee since he was first sworn into office in 2011. The committee plays a critical role in the economic development and job growth of our nation.
“I’ve enjoyed working with Congressman Barletta on the committee over the past two years, and I look forward to having him as Subcommittee Chairman,” Chairman Shuster said. “As the former mayor of Hazleton, Rep. Barletta is no stranger to economic development concerns and emergency management issues. He brings a great deal of credibility and experience to his new post.”
“At a time when economic woes and natural disasters are plaguing our country, I am honored that Chairman Shuster has placed his confidence in me to chair this very important subcommittee,” Rep. Barletta said. “I look forward to working with Chairman Shuster to examine how we can best help economically distressed cities, strengthen our country’s emergency management system, and heighten oversight of our nation’s public buildings.”
The Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management has jurisdiction over the nation’s emergency preparedness policy and programs and conducts oversight of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The Subcommittee oversees agencies and programs promoting economic development in communities suffering economic distress, such as the Appalachian Regional Commission. The Subcommittee also exercises oversight of public buildings, federal real estate programs and the Public Buildings Service (PBS) of the General Services Administration (GSA).
