Senator Pat Toomey Is Willing To Reach Across Aisle

Harrisburg Patriot-News

In your Dec. 7 editorial “Giving Ground,” The Patriot-News gave U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., deserved credit for his efforts to solve the “fiscal cliff” crisis facing the federal government.

Since his election to the U.S. Senate, Toomey has been a leading voice on America’s finance issues and served on the House-Senate budgetary “supercommittee.”

Toomey has consistently reached across the aisle, working with Senate Democrats on legislation that has been signed into law by President Obama. Here at home, Sens. Toomey and Bob Casey work in concert on federal judicial appointments and issues regarding Pennsylvania’s military facilities.

Toomey’s willingness to compromise by offering new revenues by closing loopholes is just another example of his ability to work toward bipartisan solutions while staying true to his guiding principles.

As the nation nears the year-end “fiscal cliff,” I know Toomey will remain involved in the legislative efforts to prevent crippling tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts. Hopefully, his public-spiritedness will be reciprocated by Obama before it’s too late.

In our polarized age, Toomey’s effort to bridge the divide is politically perilous, and The Patriot-News deserves praise for recognizing the senator’s leadership.
