U.S. Senators Pat Toomey, R-Pa., and Bob Casey, D-Pa., filed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would require the Defense Department to study the possible development of a joint service military history storage and preservation facility in Carlisle, according to a news release from Toomey’s office.
The act (S. 3254) is currently pending on the Senate floor.
Earlier this month, Toomey and Casey introduced a bill — the Joint Military Heritage Preservation Act (S. 3634) — that would study the feasibility of bringing a portion of the Navy’s historical collection to the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center in Middlesex Township and creating a joint Army-Navy storage and preservation facility.
“This bipartisan amendment would help preserve our precious military history collections and educate future generations about the sacrifices our service members and veterans have made to protect our freedoms,” Toomey said. “The U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center already has the technology, capability, staff and knowledge to help the other branches of the military better preserve their documents and history. I look forward to seeing this study’s conclusions on how we can better maximize excess capacity at existing facilities and use taxpayer dollars more efficiently.”
“Pennsylvania has played a key role in our nation’s history, and we must take steps to preserve that history for future generations,” Casey said. “A careful examination of historical preservation by the Defense Department could bolster AHEC and the key role it plays in the Carlisle community.”
