The major-party candidates for Pennsylvania auditor general vow that they would not campaign for higher office while serving as the state’s independent fiscal watchdog.
Republican state Rep. John Maher and Democrat state Rep. Eugene DePasquale both said Friday night during the first televised debate of the general-election campaign that they would serve out their full term.
Libertarian candidate Betsy Summers, a Wilkes-Barre businesswoman, said she has no plans at present to run for governor.
Maher repeatedly stressed his experience as a certified public accountant, while DePasquale said his experience in the executive and legislative branches has taught him where to look for fraud and abuse. Summers claimed to the only true political independent in the race.
The hourlong debate was held at the Widener University Law School in Harrisburg.
