The nation’s unemployment rate nudged up from 8.1 percent to 8.2 percent as more people searched for a job while the nation’s employers only hired 69,000 extra workers.
The bad news is another blow to President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign, which has stalled amid record unemployment, debts and deficits. The extra 69,000 jobs is far below the normal monthly growth in the workforce, which is powered by the monthly arrival of roughly 150,000 graduates and immigrants.
The president is expected to speak at 12:10 about the economy at a press event in Minneapolis at Honeywell International’s Golden Valley facility. He’ll likely demand that Congress immediately implement his so-called “To Do List”, which includes a bill to help veterans find jobs.
After the event, he’ll attend three fundraisers in Minneapolis and three in Chicago.
The unemployment numbers were released at 8:30 a.m. by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and show an uptick in unemployment for men and Hispanics, at rates of 7.8 percent and 11 percent, respectively. The number of people working part-time also increased.
More people tried to find jobs, boosting the civilian labor force participation rate by 0.2 percentage points to 63.8 percent.
The only good news for the White House was a slight increase in the industrial sector, which added 12,000 jobs.
