The Republican National Committee rolled out a new web video Monday as part of a campaign critical of the president’s latest budget proposal, which the GOP decried as not doing enough to reduce the deficit.
The video, titled “My Daughter’s Future,” argues that “Obama is mortgaging our children’s future,” according to the RNC. In the spot, a mother says that the day her daughter was born was the “happiest day of of my life,” but worries that as the debt increases, “our children will have to pay for his reckless spending.”
“President Obama, you broke your promise. I’ll never forget that,” the narrator concludes.
RNC Chairman Reince Priebus characterized the president’s budget, details of which emerged over the weekend, as the latest “in a long line of failed promises that the American people won’t forget when they vote to put an end to his presidency this November.”
“President Obama promised to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term but instead ran up trillion dollar deficits every year he’s been in office,” said Priebus in a statement. “His budget for next year is more of the same. It’s full of more spending and more tax increases that have put this country deeper into debt.”
The White House, meanwhile, argues that the president’s budget addresses the national debt head on, seeking more than $4 trillion in deficit reduction over the next 10 years through spending cuts and higher taxes on the wealthy.
White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew maintained that the president’s plan would balance reductions against important infrastructure improvements during a series of morning show appearances Sunday.
“It’ll make sure we have a manufacturing base; it’ll make sure we have Americans with the skills we need for the future and we’ll make sure we have an energy program that gives us independence,” Lew told Fox News Sunday.
