Corbett Puts Up $15M To Dredge Delaware River

NBC Philadelphia

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett is releasing $15 million to continue a controversial dredging project on the Delaware River that he says will create jobs.

Corbett, who chairs the two-state Delaware River Port Authority, announced the state funding Wednesday at the Packer Marine Terminal in Philadelphia.

Project supporters say the dredging will boost economic development by permitting bigger ships to reach Pennsylvania’s largest city.

The Army Corps of Engineers has already completed deepening one segment of the river channel below Philadelphia from 40 feet to 45 feet. Port officials say the $15 million will allow dredging to begin on a second river segment next month.
